Who is this for?

Homeowners in Hickory, Conover, Newton, Mountain View, the Lake Hickory area and the rest of Catawba County who are tired of cleaning gutters, or whose gutters aren't keeping water away from the house. A lot of homes here sit under mature oaks, maples, poplars and pines, and those trees fill gutters every fall and drop seeds, pollen and needles the rest of the year.

Do gutter guards actually work?

Good ones, installed well, cut gutter cleaning way down. They don't make gutters maintenance-free. Fine debris like pine needles, pollen and roof grit can still collect on top of a guard or work through it, and most guards need an occasional rinse or brush-off. What a guard does is keep leaves, sticks and seed pods out of the trough and downspouts, which is what causes most overflows and clogs.

What kinds of gutter guards are there?

  • Micro-mesh. A fine stainless steel mesh over a frame. Stops the smallest debris, including most pine needles, and is the most common choice for heavily wooded lots.
  • Screens and perforated covers. Metal or plastic with larger openings. Less expensive and fine for big leaves, but small debris gets through.
  • Reverse-curve (surface tension) hoods. Water follows a curved lip into the gutter while leaves slide off. Works well in many cases but can overshoot in very heavy downpours and is visible from the ground.
  • Foam and brush inserts. Sit inside the gutter. Easy to install but tend to hold debris and need replacing sooner.

Can guards go on my existing gutters?

Often, yes, if the gutters are solid, properly pitched toward the downspouts and firmly attached. If your gutters are sagging, leaking at the seams, pulling away from the fascia or too small for your roof, it usually makes more sense to replace them with seamless gutters and put guards on at the same time.

How much rain do gutters here have to handle?

The Hickory area averages about 47 inches of precipitation a year, based on NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals for the nearest long-term station. Rain falls fairly evenly through the year, with August the wettest month at close to 5 inches. Summer thunderstorms can drop a lot of water in a short burst, which is when undersized or clogged gutters overflow. Hurricane Helene in September 2024 brought wind gusts over 50 mph to the Hickory airport and knocked down trees across the county, a reminder that gutters, fascia and downspouts take a beating in big storms.

What happens when gutters don't work?

  • Water pouring over the front edge during rain
  • Peeling paint or rot on fascia boards and soffits
  • Puddles, washed-out mulch or erosion along the foundation
  • Damp or leaking basements and crawl spaces
  • Plants or seedlings growing in the gutter
  • Gutters sagging or pulling away from the house
